Travel to Calabria

San-Nicola-Arcella-Calabria

Are you familiar with Calabria? If you're looking for a region in Italy that hasn't yet been overrun by tourists from all over the world, take a look at Calabria, home to the beautiful beach town of Tropea. This area is still largely untouched by mass tourism. Quaint villages, stunning vistas of snow-covered mountain peaks within one of the most beautiful national parks, and seemingly endless white sandy beaches alongside a deep blue sea are bound to attract tourists in the near future.

The Ionian Coast of Calabria - Travel Tips for Calabria

Why is Calabria such a great vacation destination?

Although it's somewhat challenging to get to with only one international airport that's not even centrally located, it is worth the effort.

New state-of-the-art water purification systems have been installed along the coast, ensuring clean and safe ocean swimming. Furthermore, Calabria produces a third of Italy's total of olive oil. Reggio di Calabria is the most famous town, with Scalea, Tropea, and Crotone being the top beach destinations.

I'm leaving the province of Vibo Valentina and Tropea with a short morning visit to Capo Vaticano, on my way to Reggio Calabria. It's a breathtaking view from the lighthouse, on the threshold of mythical places like Scilla. The story of Scylla (Scilla) and Charybdis is one of the most famous episodes from Homer's "Odyssey". I'm not going to rewrite the entire myth here, so you'll have to make do with my abbreviated version.

During my travels through Italy, I came across a place in the heart of Calabria, deeply hidden within the province of Cosenza: Sila. This is not just a spot on the map; it's a deep dive into authentic Italy, but with tourist centers that are unexpectedly modern, with interesting museums and a well-organized visitor center, especially in the National Park.

People often ask: should I skip Crotone? In fact, I'd suggest adding Crotone to your itinerary; it's an undiscovered gem with a charm that's not immediately apparent. It's true that Crotone may not be as well known as other destinations, but that's precisely its appeal. You will have the chance to discover the hidden beauty that is only briefly mentioned in guidebooks, hinting at the unspoilt and authentic experience that awaits the curious traveller.

  • Tropea and the Costa degli Dei, southernly beaches in Calabria

As we enter Tropea, the thought crosses my mind that you better not drop anything out of your window because retrieving it would be quite a task. The Lungomare, the boulevard, gracefully wraps around the rock upon which the old town perches. The houses seem like a straight extension upwards. There are essentially two Tropeas, one sits neatly on the ground, where most residents have their homes. And then, at dizzying heights, there's the other part.

  • Italian beaches - Sun, Sea and Sand

Everyone knows this beach on Sardinia

Italy is actually a peninsula, peppered with stunning islands, islets and lagoons from the top of its bootstraps down around the heel and back up the other side, there are over 4000 miles of Italian beaches. You can visit islands in a day, such as Elba, Capri or Tropea, or hop the scattered islets of the Venetian lagoon. Further afield, Lampedusa or Sicily beckons and of course, ...
