Spring in Italy always makes for a busy calendar of events, not only because of various important sagras and religious celebrations, but also because of numerous fairs. Yes, folks, more than 30 events, so get ready. To help you navigate our favorite events, please check out the events map or list of Spring events below.

Spring highlights in Italy

Salone del Mobile in Milan and Vinitaly in Verona

Milan - Salone di Mobile - The biggest annual event for Design in Europe

The highlights of spring are undoubtedly the Salone del Mobile in Milan and Vinitaly in Verona. Both are very attractive to visitors, so booking your hotel early is not a luxury. In Milan, with exhibitions and open houses of various interior design and design houses, the Fuorisalone area has a lot to offer. The area around the Brera, the Corso Como and the streets around the Via Montenapoleone are the centers of special exhibitions. The fashion houses will be presenting special themes during the week, with creative installations in the interiors and art exhibitions. In addition, there will be a full cultural program in the tunnels behind the Central Railway Station, with exhibitions, installations, workshops and conferences by Italian and international creators.

Salone del Mobile

Verona - Welcomes visitors for the biggest Italian wine event in Europe

Verona's annual wine festival is a major event. In one place you will find wines from all over Italy and from all over the world, both from famous producers and from niche producers. The event also includes seminars, tastings, competitions, conferences, roundtables, presentations and other activities. In order to be a part of the event, you must have a relationship with the wine industry. However, if you know someone (anywhere in the world) who is involved in the wine business in any way (e.g. a café, restaurant or shop), they can sign up for a free account and get up to 4 tickets - so you can always just ask and reimburse them. If you are a true wine lover, the purchase of tickets is highly recommended. This year there are also several other events related to Vinitaly, such as the SOL for olive oil, and a big hall that is entirely dedicated to beer! Cheers.

Vinitaly

Other food and wine events in the spring

Vinum - Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Wine Country in Piedmont

Not only does Vinitaly attract wine tourists to Italy in the spring, but the Piedmont region of Alba home to a UNESCO landscape heritage site for the vineyards is also known for highlights such as the highly recommended Vinum Alba wine festival. Other wine events are Borgo diVino (a traveling wine festival among the Borghi piu Belli d'Italia) and the Val d'Orcia wine festival, and on May 25, Cantine Aperte, a nationwide wine event organized by the Movimento Turismo Vino Organisation.

The most important food fair in Italy and Europe, CIBUS, is held in Parma famous for it's Parmigiano cheese and Parmaham, where you will find the largest representation of Italian producers in the world. Touristically, it's not that important, but if you plan to visit Parma during your stay in Italy, you won't find a hotel room for miles around during these dates.

There are, however, many smaller food-related events that you might want to consider scheduling. For example, the Archi di Pasqua, or Bread Arches Festival, in San Biagio Platani, Sicily, is a wonderful event where the whole town is decorated with, you guessed it, bread. Then, in the Lazio region  of which Rome is the capital, there is the Ladispoli Artichoke Festival. This event is a highlight for the town, as otherwise Ladispoli is a bit boring. However, the event is not too big and is a fun family outing, especially if you like artichokes. There is also a lot going on in the fishing village of Camogli on the Ligurian coast, where in the middle of May it is time for the La Sagra del Pesce (Fish Festival) di Camogli.

The Rolli Days of Genoa - 18th-century pageantry at the biannual historical festival.

Culture and religious holidays in the Spring in Italy

As far as religious events are concerned, the second quarter of every year in Italy is always a colorful one. I emphasize the word "colorful" because although everything is preceded by Mass and a procession, it is a festival, often with a folkloric touch and lots of flowers.

Visitors admire the vibrant tapestry of flower petals during the annual 'Infiorata di Noto' festival in the baroque town of Noto, Sicily

In Lucca, a town you must not miss in Northern Tuscany, they will celebrate the Day of Santa Zita, a colorful floral event in the historic center. However, flower lovers should not miss the most famous and literally breathtaking flower carpets. These can be found in towns such as in picturesque Noto in Sicily, equally beautiful Spello in Umbria, as well as small towns in Lazio near Rome of which Genzano is the most famous. A magical event in Rome is undoubtedly the rain of rose petals on the Pantheon on May 19. On April 25, Italy's national holiday, Venice celebrates the feast of San Marco (the city's patron saint) and Bocolo. During the feast, each loved one is given a red rose.
