In Florence, brunch actually doesn't exist, and I know few Italians who succumb to this American habit. Brunching is simply a very un-Italian concept of eating extensively somewhere between breakfast and lunch. Brunch is that moment when you decide that time is an illusion and meals need not be defined by the clock, and that almost sounds like a holiday!

It's the culinary equivalent of "I can't decide, so I'll have them both." A meal where you can have pancakes with a side of fries, because, why not? The rules of society don't apply at the brunch table. A few years ago, in 2016 to be exact, I wrote this same article, and my colleague told me then that one on my list, Café Florian, was already closed (thank you Ciao Tutti), unfortunately, today as I update this article, I find out that half of my former addresses have closed. Therefore, we went out in search of new places in Florence where you can enjoy a delightful brunch, but if you plan to visit Florence, for heaven's sake, don't wait too long, otherwise, half of them might close down.

Ditta Artiginale

The newcomers - Brunch in Florence

A popular young newcomer in Florence is Ditta Artiginale, which rapidly opened 4 slow food & fair coffee locations in Florence. The brunch is served between 9 am and 3 pm. The brunch menu is a combination of classics such as Bagels & Lox, French Toast, Pancakes, or Florence Cadillac Club Sandwich, and seasonal novelties. The top dish of the summer is the Chilled Cream of Corn Soup and Roasted Chickpea Quinoa Bowl. Vegans will also find plenty of choices. Each location has its specialty; for example, the one on Riva d'Arno has a quiet courtyard garden, and the one on via dei Carducci features a Barista school and coffee roastery tours.

Ditta Artiginale in Florence now at 5 locations with its own bakery and roastery

The newest location at Piazza Ferrucci is not only designed for breakfast or a cup of coffee but above all to be a cultural place, a green oasis where you can stop between the different islands in response to the need to come together and discuss over a cup. 'Ditta Artigianale Piazza Ferrucci' is unique because of the bakery, an ultra-modern pastry and bakery workshop that aims to revolutionize the concept of pastry and baking. The bakery of Ditta Artiginale is inspired by the French and Northern European school of pastry, with North American influences, giving it an Italian and Florentine touch.

Le Vespe Cafe was started in 2013 by two friends, one Florentine and one Canadian. The café focuses on serving a Canadian-style breakfast/lunch with a healthy twist in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They use suppliers who, like them, practice ethically responsible business. The dishes are prepared daily, and the menu changes seasonally to take advantage of always fresh products. In addition to delicious and healthy juices and smoothies, you'll find American Pancakes, French Toast, Bagels with scrambled eggs, even a Mexican breakfast wrap with eggs, and much more. Of course, they also offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options!

Melaleuca Bakery + Bistrot is an airy café on the Arno in the Santa Croce district, just outside the usual tourist circuit but always lively with Florentine locals. It is run by an Australian/Italian-American couple, Chloé and Marco, who reflect their international flair in both the modern design and the menu. Having met in Cairns and worked in London, they settled in Florence and opened Melaleuca.

The coffee is excellent, with expert baristas and a presentation you must experience. The flat white is recommended, as are the delicious cinnamon rolls, straight out of the oven and topped with homemade frosting. Bagels are also available! The savoury dishes are equally delightful. Melaleuca focuses on top-quality local ingredients, with a menu that varies by season. For a Sunday brunch, it's advisable to arrive before 10 am to secure a table. Open: Monday to Friday from 7 am to 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm.

Old and trusted - Brunch in Florence

Afternoon tea at the St Regis Florence

You should keep an eye on the Villa Cora website regarding the traditional brunch. At the moment, there is no brunch, but it is expected to return. In any case, it is one of the coziest locations in Florence for brunch and it can be quite spectacular. Countless dishes, sweet and savoury, all prepared with love. Brunch usually takes place from 12:30 pm onwards, with live music and a separate area for children with animators and TV. Definitely a fun family outing. What makes the brunch special is that almost all the dishes are innovative, perhaps it's a kind of test kitchen?
